| For most of his career Richard Zimmerman has devoted considerable time and effort to researching, learning and recording rare and neglected ragtime instrumentals, songs and blues. Some of the best are preserved on these recordings where they emerge as fresh and appealing as they were almost a century ago. |

| From 1897 to 1918 the term "ragtime" was used to describe many types of music. While ragtime technically involved a syncopated melody played against a march-time bass, almost every up-tempo or rhythmic piece was thought of as "ragtime." Many of these were comedy songs, blues, ballads and novelties popularized by vaudeville singers. Ragtime instrumentals included marches, two-steps, one-steps, cakewaks and fox-trots. Although their comosers are forgotten, some of these have become so much a part of American life that they are almost regarded as folk music. In this unique collection Richard Zimmerman plays 18 all-time ragtime favorites in fresh arrangements which breathe new life into these classics while still retaining all of their original appeal and vitality. There are 59 minutes of music with detailed notes about each selection. Here on one recording is some of the most imortant and enduring music from the original Ragtime Years. No collection of American music is complete without it. Digitally recorded. |
Richard Zimmerman has compiled a 71-minute program of 29 rare original ragtime piano rolls and digitally recorded them on a magnificent player piano. Operating the expression controls of the instrument, he was able to achieve amazingly lifelike recordings representing a cross-section of many style of ragtime -- May Aufderheide's melodic Novelty Rag, Ford Dabney's classic Oh! You Angel, Calvin Woolsey's folksy Funny Bones, Henry Lodge's Latin-tinged Tango Land, E. Phillip Severin's florid Sky Rockets, and Callis Welborn Jackson's quintessential folk rag Texas Rag -- plus other superb rags by top composers. This is the first time most of these rags have ever been recorded. Here are the original and authentic sounds of ragtime! |
Some of ragtime's most appealing sounds are found in the earliest rags, songs and cakewalks. Here are 14 beautiful rags published between 1897 and 1906 played by Richard Zimmerman. They include the seldom-heard Rag Medley by Max Hoffman, Doun Souf' in Alabama by B.H. Janssen, One O' Them Things by James Chapman and Popularity by George M. Cohan. There's also the first true rag ever published, Louisiana Rag by Theodore H. Northrup, plus three early Scott Joplin rags. Each one is a winner! |
