Scott Joplin (1868-1917), now hailed as one of America's great composers, singlehandedly elevated an overlooked and often-maligned music -- the piano rag -- to the level of art. Except for his one hit, Maple Leaf Rag (1899) , his works were overlooked and neglected in their day -- even his opera Treemonisha.
