Scott Joplin (1868-1917), now hailed as one of America's great composers, singlehandedly elevated an overlooked and often-maligned music -- the piano rag -- to the level of art. Except for his one hit, Maple Leaf Rag (1899) , his works were overlooked and neglected in their day -- even his opera Treemonisha. In the 1970s a revival of his music began, inspired by the use of his rags in the film The Sting. Since then they have come from the dance hall to the concert hall where they have been applauded worldwide. |
