This lovely and historic Opera House has been a crown jewel of the City of Woodstock since its construction in 1890. This "Steamboat Gothic" theater is the perfect setting to hear ragtime and other forms of acoustic music.
The interior was lovingly and carefully restored to its original beauty in the 1970s. The restoration has continued, with the latest project being the portico. It looms gracefully over the equally historic Woodstock Square, featured in the film, "Goundhog Day."
The building is owned by the City of Woodstock and is on the National Register of Historic Places, and encourages the participation of local producers and theater groups. It is also the proud home of the annual Woodstock Mozart Festival, which draws major talent from around the world.
The Woodstock Opera House has a very rich history, with many fine actors having graced the ornate procsineum stage, including: Orson Wells, Geraldine Page, Paul Newman and Shelley Berman Today, performers like Arlo Guthrie, Leon Redbone, and Max Morath make annual appearances there.
